Flinders Island – wombats

Having visited Flinders Island previously, you hit the ground running. An early change of plans however, because it is a public holiday today, so The Doc cannot buy food. So off the pub for lunch. They are generous helpings and The Doc still feels full at 9pm.

When driving around the Island there was a lot of roadkill, especially wombats. Rowena at the car hire firm had mentioned at least 4 juvenile wombats were being looked after. She described them and they sound quite cute.

A quick rest then off to West End for wildlife, quite a few Bennett’s Wallabies and Pademelons. The Doc is still sorting the photos so only a wombat today, roadkill I am afraid, as the live ones tend to avoid people. They tend to give you their behind, often just running into the bush leaving their backsides showing, one today did a similar thing on the road, which increases the chance of becoming roadkill.

Flinders Island – return trip

The Doc leaves early Monday morning for Flinders Island for a second visit. Reports from the first trip are here, here (textures) and here (wildlife). There is still a few things to do, as Flinders is a large Island.

A follow up report on the wildlife, mostly the albino echidna (actually light brown not white) and the Bennett’s Wallaby. Plus the odd wombat, some young masked lapwing and a reptile or two. Report and pictures here.

Piccaninny Pleasures

Just returned from a Cape York Trip visiting the AWC Sanctuary called Piccaninny Plains. Piccaninny Plains is the name of the pastoral lease if you were wondering. Report and photos here.

AWC in the Simpson

While crossing the Simpson Desert our convoy passed another heading east to west. They were a group of 3 motorcycles. The Doc was “Tail End Charlie” (the last in the convoy) and stopped to tell the leader he was the last car. The leader of the other group said he was an AWC supporter and gave The Doc the thumbs up after seeing the stickers on the side of The Doc’s car.

Next week the Doc is off to AWC’s Mornington Sanctuary in The Kimberly, should be great.

A bridled nail tail wallaby this time, once thought to be extinct in Australia, but now thriving on AWC’s Scotia Sanctuary.

Back on the road

The next road trip starts tomorrow. Sorry I could not finish the Kangaroo Island reports. At least 2 maybe 3 more reports to come.

Next stop the Central Coast, then the Warrumbungles, then across to Broken Hill, via Dubbo and the Western Plains Zoo. Then down to AWC’s Scotia Sanctuary in Outback NSW.

Back to Broken Hill and then a 2 week Simpson Desert crossing finishing at White Cliffs.

Then to Sydney by some long route, then on a plane to Broome. Next stop AWC’s Mornington Sanctuary in the Central Kimberly’s. Back to Sydney then out to Deniliquin for some bird photography. A bit over 2 months in total.

Part 2(d) – Parndana and the Heartland of KI

This Report covers central part of Kangaroo island. It will be the shortest of the reports. Parndana is a solders settlement. After World War 2 some large areas were cleared in the central part of KI to settle solders after their return from war. Report here.
