Picca in the wet

In August 2014 The Doc attended an AWC Event at Piccaninny Plains, the full Report can be read here (well worth a read). The AWC Event took place in the dry season.

On Day 4 of the Cape York helicopter trip The Doc flew over a Piccaninny Plains again, this time it was the wet season. We did not land but managed to get some aerial shots as we flew over the Sanctuary, including Green Swamp.

On the way in we flew over a cattle station to the north and as we left Picca (its nickname) we entered Oyala Thumotang National Park, formerly known as Mungkan Kandju National Park (no idea how to pronounce either name). This National Park stretches from the McIlwraith Range foothills, between the Archer and Coen Rivers, and features open eucalypt woodlands, melaleuca swamps and a variety of rainforest types. Piccaninny Plains has a similar geography, but the quality is better.

Once you enter Picca it was very noticeable that the bird life increases significantly. Also the amount of water was more than the surrounding properties. Picca has Piccaninny Creek, the Archer River and numerous melaleuca swamps. It is a beautiful property, AWC chose well.
