Part 2(e) – American River

The American River Region of KI includes Pelican Lagoon, Muston, Nepean Bay and Red Banks. Although strictly not part of the American River Region, the nearby American Beach has been added.

American River derives from when American sealers were on Kangaroo Island. It is also the home of the endangered Red Tailed Black Cockatoo. But The Doc’s two visits did not yield any sightings.

The Doc visited Muston on the first day. At Muston there marine reserve and a lookout over the water, not much else. It is best explored on the water and The Doc had no boat.

American River is a short drive from Muston. American River has the small township on this part of  KI. There is a nice camp ground at American River, some shops, a jetty and a small marina.

The Doc found Pelican Lagoon, Nepean Bay and Red Bank far more interesting.

Pelican Lagoon and Pelican Lagoon Conservation Park was a favourite of The Doc’s. It was perfect for a sunset photo. But despite several attempts the photo never came together. Mostly due to clouds coming in late and blocking the setting sun, or else the tide was wrong. It was the most frustrating part of the trip, great scenery, great spot to photograph but the elements never co-operated.

So you will need to settle for a less than a perfect shot.

American Beach, located near Brown Beach and Baudin Beach.

Part (a) of the Report has already covered Nepean Bay and Red Bank, so just a few more shots.

The upcoming North Coast Report is huge.
