Scotia Special

In early May The Doc attended an AWC Supporter’s event at AWC’s Scotia Sanctuary, outback NSW. A short report was posted but only one picture. Here are some more pictures.

The Supporters arrived around lunchtime Friday. We were allocated rooms in the Bilby Block. Each room has its own toilet and bathroom, a luxury in Outback NSW.

The western border of Scotia is the NSW/South Australian border. Scotia has the largest feral proof fence on the mainland and protects some of Australia’s most endangered small mammals like numbats, bilbies, woylies, boodies and malas. Mallee fowl are also breeding at Scotia.

Over the next 2 ½ days there were various talks on feral foxes and cats, especially on how they are controlled outside the fence.

At night we learned more about the small mammals followed by some spot lighting, as most mammals are nocturnal.

Here are some of the photos of the event. One picture of a boodie, mallee fowl, several of the bridled nailed tail wallaby (a female with pouch young) and the T-Rex of the marsupial world, the mala or rufous hare wallaby.

Pitfall trapping displays were given, some tracking of “animals” with a yagi antenna, which turned out to be a bottle of red wine. The Event was finished off with sunset drinks, at Sunset Ridge looking over the South Australian border.

Thanks, to David, Leah, Shauna, Jo, Mel, Macca all those who worked behind the scenes to make the Event possible.

The Doc will shortly fly to another event at Piccaninny Plains on Cape York. Edit: Picca Report here.
