Great Central Road – Australia’s longest shortcut

The Doc is now in Alice Springs for 2 days preparing to go to AWC’s Newhaven Sanctuary on the Tanami Track north of Alice.

This trip started with a visit to AWC’s Bowra Sanctuary and will finish with AWC’s Newhaven Sanctuary. The 2 big AWC sanctuaries for birders. The Doc would love to get some good shots of Princess Parrots at Newhaven, time will tell.

Then The Doc will make his way home after 4 months on the road. The most likely route will be the Plenty Highway (starts just north of Alice Springs) to Boulia in Queensland then back to the bitumen through Longreach and Outback Queensland to Ballina for a week, then Sydney.

Using the Great Central Road saved 1,500kms and 2 long days driving and he hopes the Plenty Highway will give a similar saving. This trip has roughly another 4,000kms to go, bringing the grand total a bit under 30,000kms over the 4 months. It has been a long trip on rough roads and the body is beginning to say enough.

Back on the road

The next road trip starts tomorrow. Sorry I could not finish the Kangaroo Island reports. At least 2 maybe 3 more reports to come.

Next stop the Central Coast, then the Warrumbungles, then across to Broken Hill, via Dubbo and the Western Plains Zoo. Then down to AWC’s Scotia Sanctuary in Outback NSW.

Back to Broken Hill and then a 2 week Simpson Desert crossing finishing at White Cliffs.

Then to Sydney by some long route, then on a plane to Broome. Next stop AWC’s Mornington Sanctuary in the Central Kimberly’s. Back to Sydney then out to Deniliquin for some bird photography. A bit over 2 months in total.

Part 2(c) – The South Coast of Kangaroo Island

Another huge update on Kangaroo Island. This time the South Coast covering places like D’Estrees Bay, Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park, Seal Bay, Vivonne Bay, Hanson Bay, Kelly Hill Caves and Flinders Chase National Park. Report here.

Part 2 KI – Penneshaw and the Dudley Peninsula

Another big Kangaroo Island update, this time Penneshaw and the Dudley Penninsula. Situated on the northeast coast of the Island, this area includes Penneshaw, Christmas Cove, the Desal Plant, Antechamber Bay, Chapman River, Cape Willoughby, Cape Hart & Mount Flat Beach. Report here.

On the road

The Doc has now explored the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, especially around Victor Harbour and the mouth of the Mighty Murray, he then moved on to Kangaroo Island for 3 weeks and will return to Sydney the long way, via Yango and Mungo National Parks.

When he returns home he will first post the Easter Island update which is written, then the Kangaroo Island Report and finish with Fleurieu. The Doc may also add Mungo National Park.

The Kangaroo Island Report will be divided into 3 parts: KI main attractions, Around KI and lastly KI wildlife.

The main KI attractions are the Remarkable Rocks, the Lighthouses (mostly Cape du Couedic Lighthouse) and Admirals Arch. Others include Raptor Domain and the Australian and New Zealand Fur seals (to be in The Doc’s Widllife Report). This what the one day tour involves. One day visitors sure miss a lot.
