Arnhem Land escarpment

There is a massive escarpment in Arnhem Land that divides most of Arnhem Land up on the plateau from the smaller coastal part. Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls are examples of water flowing off the escarpment in Kakadu National Park. It is rarely shown.

During my helicopter trip over Arnhem Land and Kakadu I flew along the escarpment. Here are some images, the escapement is HUGE (especially in a helicopter about 100m away.)

Still around

The Doc is still around. He is just back from Mount Zero Taravale an AWC Sanctuary near Townsville Far North Queensland. Report to follow.

The Doc has been working on macro images, plus some long neglected domestic chores, like updating the laundry and replacing the air con.

There were some technical problems with the Blog which he fixed today allowing him to post once again.

Bowra, Charleville, Quilpie & Eromanga

Part 2 of the trip, The Doc is now in Queensland with stunning sunsets and giant dinosaur fossils. Report here.

Blog is now back up

The Blog went down when The Doc was on the road. All good now (holds breath). Updates about the trip to Central NSW and and Outback Queensland will come in due course. Here is a sample, sunset at Quilpie. Click to see full size.

East MacDonnell Ranges – travel guide

The Doc has written as travel and photo guide for the East MacDonnell Ranges using Alice Springs as your starting point. Guide can be viewed here.

Grevilleas

The Docs’s father recently passed away and he was in Ballina. He had a little spare time to photograph native flowers planted by his father.

They are all from the Grevillea family, cut from the plant and lit under flash. The background is black because The Doc was using the inverse square law! Enjoy.

Learning off-camera flash

As part of the his macro work The Doc is learning how to better use his flash, both on and off the camera. He did a little bit of macro on the Northern Territory trip, but the wind did not help. So more needs to be learned about off camera flash (which copes with wind much better and gives better results).

While at Ballina The Doc is also buying a basic off-camera kit like lightstands, triggers, adapters and flash cold shoes. He has spent several days reading, rereading and watching videos, when he is not painting his parents balcony. Up to coat 5 so far!Lets not forget about washing cars as well.

As part of his research he needed to learn about lightstand adapters and cold shoes. Here is the background research on the adapters and cold shoes.
