Textures of the Australian Bush: Lake Eyre

The fifth instalment of Textures of the Australian Bush covers Lake Eyre. Lake Eyre is the largest inland lake in Australia and also the lowest point on the continent. From memory it has filled an unprecedented 3 times in the last 4 years. It is now drying out, with no visible water seen during our flight. Some of the colouration is bacteria, indicating there is still some moisture in the Lake.

Sometimes you see mounds, these are points where the Great Artisan Basin deposits artisan water into the Lake. We visited places like this called The Blurber and Blanches Cup in the country surrounding Lake Erye.

Most of the northern edge of Lake Eyre borders Kalamurina, the largest of AWC’s Sanctuaries. Enjoy.

Lake Eyre South still has water, which we saw from the Lookout, the flight did not cover Lake Eyre South.
