Part 2(g) – North Coast

This Region covers a large area of Kangaroo Island including Emu Bay, Cape Cassini, Stokes Bay, Snelling Beach, Middle River, Western River Cove, Pebbly Beach, and Cape Borda.

Emu Bay
Emu Bay is close to Kingscote the business centre of the Island. On the way to Emu Bay you pass salt lakes on your left. One day when The Doc was passing these lakes the road was covered with crickets, 100’s of thousands of them all over a dirt road off the main sealed road.

Emu Bay is a popular swimming beach and is one of few on KI where vehicles are permitted. There is small jetty and boat ramp. The camp ground is little underwhelming, so The Doc never stayed there. The beach is nice though.

Nearby were some old farm ruins which have also been included.

Pebbly Beach
A beach on the road to nowhere and not well travelled. As the name suggests, there are mostly large pebbles on the beach with sand only visible at low tide.

The rocks are covered in very bright red/orange lichen and at sunset the golden glow was overpowering. So much so, it hardly looked real. A place not many visit.

Snelling Beach
Snelling Beach is another popular beach. The Doc has included the nearby river which feeds into the sea at Snelling Beach during floods.

Stokes Bay
Stokes Bay is one of the most popular destinations on this part of KI. You are greeted by a small bay with many rock at the car park. You then walk through rocks, very narrow at times, certainly not for the claustrophobic. Then you reach a beautiful beach and vista.

Middle River and Western Cove
The morning light hitting the trees when The Doc first drove into this area was breathtaking. The pictures do not quite do it justice and it was well after what photographers call the golden hour. It is isolated and not well visited part of the Island.

The Doc finally found somewhere where the waste of the previous Federal Government was actually used well. To upgrade the camp ground. The price? The bridge was named after a former minister who allocated the money, what a disgrace. The locals were not impressed and said the bridge should have been named after the founder of the nearby historic homestead.

Wilderness Areas
There are some wilderness areas in this part of KI, Western River River Protection Area which has Billy Goat Falls. But the waterfall was dry when The Doc visited. Which makes for boring viewing. It was a difficult area to traverse, so not many decent photos. The Doc did not make it to the coast.

A similar result for the Cape Torrens Wilderness Area. The Doc hiked along a dry creek bed but was blocked after about 20 minutes. Perhaps an experienced guide may have helped.

There are actually many more parts to the Kangaroo Island, but it is time to see some wildlife in the next Report.
