The North Coast was too large for one report, so The Doc carved out the Cape Borda Region.
The road to Cape Borda is hands down the worst road on KI. The Doc returned along this road one day to Kingscote to refuel. The Patrol’s passenger side tail light was hanging out and the screws had fallen out of the driver’s side as well.
Cape Borda has the smallest lighthouse, a poor cousin on the other two. A smallish affair with the light perched on top of a square box. They are quick to tell you it is a Lighthouse not a Maritime Beacon. It does have a nice red canon which is still fired each day at 12.30pm.
Cape Borda is the highest part of KI and the lighthouse did not need to be very big. The seas pound the high cliffs and this is a remote part of the Island. That is about 180m down to the water, from memory.
The Cape Borda Region has the Ravine of the Cassowaries, Scott’s Cove and Harvey’s Return. Harvey Return was the only beach landing near Cape Borda and is how the Lighthouse was supplied in the early days, by sea. You cannot appreciate how steep part of Harvey’s Return is from the photos.
Scott’s Cove was a nice scenic area, if you walked 50 metres or so. Again the Doc saw people drive down the road but not actually get and walk to see the view. This is what they missed.
Ravine of the Cassowaries or to use its correct name Ravine des Casoars. Named of course by the French Captain Baudin.
The Captain thought he saw cassowaries from the deck of the ship when looking into the ravine, they were short nosed emus. Now extinct. There were plenty when discovered, but were driven to extinction within 20 years.
It was a wonderful hike and the sites were magic, the pictures do not do the place justice. lighting was harsh when The Doc visited.
