The seventh instalment of Textures of the Australian Bush covers sand and salt of the Simpson Desert.
Crossing the Mighty Simpson Desert from West to East means you travel over 1,100 sand dunes and across several salt pans and lakes. There is not a large variation in colour, mostly red with some whites, but the texture certainly varies, mostly through wind action on the dunes. This series focuses on the salt (always mixed with sand) and a later instalment will be on the sand alone.
The crossing is neither monotonous or boring as every dune is different from the other. They vary in height, steepness, some are soft sand others firmer, you can sand ski on some and drive blind over others, trusting the car to steer correctly. Enjoy.
