Back home next week

The Doc is making tracks and will be back in Sydney next week, after 4 months on the road. The car has been serviced, bushes replaced, windscreen replaced, the electrical problem fixed (wire became exposed and was shorting on the towbar)  bonnet scoop upgraded, dents removed (mostly stone hits), front drag links upgraded, wheels aligned and the outside washed. The Patrol is running like new.

While in Ballina The Doc has been taking it easy, whale watching, watching some movies (Ant-Man, Fantastic 4 and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) and working on the car. Plus watching Series 1 to 6 of Inspector George Gently.

Time to go home to catch up on domestic matters and prepare for the upcoming New Zealand trip in September!

Sir John Gorge – Mornington

Some more Mornington Magic. A sunset shot at Sir John Gorge, at AWC’s Mornington-Marion Downs.

AWC also announced today an historic deal with NSW Parks and Wildlife to bring back long extinct animals into NSW National Parks. Press Release here.

Flinders Island – wombats

Having visited Flinders Island previously, you hit the ground running. An early change of plans however, because it is a public holiday today, so The Doc cannot buy food. So off the pub for lunch. They are generous helpings and The Doc still feels full at 9pm.

When driving around the Island there was a lot of roadkill, especially wombats. Rowena at the car hire firm had mentioned at least 4 juvenile wombats were being looked after. She described them and they sound quite cute.

A quick rest then off to West End for wildlife, quite a few Bennett’s Wallabies and Pademelons. The Doc is still sorting the photos so only a wombat today, roadkill I am afraid, as the live ones tend to avoid people. They tend to give you their behind, often just running into the bush leaving their backsides showing, one today did a similar thing on the road, which increases the chance of becoming roadkill.

Home again

Back home getting some maintenance on the car and myself. Plus more preparation for the next 3 trips, Cape York, Flinders Island and then the Kimberley. They do take some planning, which is easier at home than on the road.

The Doc had a biopsy earlier in the week (3 actually) to find out about some lesions on his face and neck. He finds out next week whether they are more serious. EDIT: It turns out they are skin cancers, so The Doc needs to go under the knife.

Panoramio views just passed 6 million views

The Doc’s explorer photos on Panoramio have just passed 6 million views. Click here. As Google is phasing out Panoramio this maybe the last major milestone.

Panoramio is where the photos in Google Earth and Google Maps come from.

Back in the Flinders Ranges

Back in the Flinders Ranges on the new road trip. Currently at Copley, next stop Arkaroola.

Just saw the coal train from Leigh Creek mine to the Power Station at Port Augusta. It travels once a day and is a mere 10,000 tonnes, powered by 3 locomotives.
